Programme overview:

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Clinical Rotation at Al Jalila Children’s Hospital is designed to provide a comprehensive and broad-based clinical experience in psychiatric diagnosis and treatment of children, and adolescents. The clinical rotation experience and supervision focuses on developing skills in diagnostic interviewing, case formulation, treatment planning, and psychotherapeutic and pharmacologic management over two years Programme.

First Year of Fellowship

The first training year encompass basic and foundational training with a focus on the role of building up knowledge and professional skills in the field of child psychiatry. This training year include exposure to medical experience relevant to Child Psychiatry with core elements in Developmental Paediatric, General Paediatrics, Paediatric Neurology and Adolescent Medicine). This is followed by placement in either General Outpatient Programme or Subspecialised Outpatient clinic. The principles and practices of a variety of assessment and treatment methods are taught on each rotation. Fellows learn specific interviewing techniques, implementation of the biopsychosocial model in the process of assessment inline with children developmental needs and adaptations of the principles of psychopharmacology and psychotherapy to children and adolescents

Second Year of Fellowship

The second year of training focuses upon the diagnosis and treatment of children, adolescents, and their families who present primarily in the inpatient/day Programme, Consultation-Liaison and subspecialty clinics. There are range of Subspecialty clinics including; Eating Disorder, Mood & Anxiety Disorder, Trauma Clinic, Neuropsychiatry clinic, Collaborative care, Substance Misuse clinic and Forensic Clinic. Fellows develop a deeper understanding of therapeutic interventions in inpatient, specialised outpatient clinics, and have the opportunity to pursue a variety of electives. In addition, there are also opportunities to develop research skills and participate in ongoing research with faculty guidance.
